It was seven years ago today. Many of you might not remember "The game of the decade."

Now we have a new one. Congrats Eagles!

Hey Springfield, "The Boys are Back in Town"!

Oran uses 7th-inning comeback for 9-8 win
Saturday, May 29, 2004
By Toby Carrig, Southeast Missourian

THAYER, Mo. -- Oran catcher Joey Williams spent much of Friday afternoon looking up at the sizeable Thayer hitters as he called pitches behind the plate.

But Oran's 5-foot-7 cleanup hitter delivered the biggest blow of the day, driving a single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh to score Trevor Irwin with the winning run in an improbable 9-8 victory against Thayer in a Class 1 state quarterfinal game.

Williams' hit capped a four-run rally that saw Oran twice come within one strike from elimination in the state tournament. Instead the Eagles will play Bevier (16-1) 11 a.m. Wednesday afternoon at Taylor Stadium on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia in a state semifinal game.

Oran (22-3) will make its third straight trip to the final four. The Thayer Bobcats (18-5) were left in shock after seeing an 8-2 lead evaporate in two innings.

"We always say, 'Ten runs up or 10 runs down, don't quit,'" Oran coach Mitch Wood said. "We tried to stay positive. I can't say I'm not surprised but we did it all year."

This time, however, Oran did it against a team that was bigger, was hitting well and was not squandering chances.

The Eagles, on the other hand, left nine runners on base over the first six innings and had been shut down for four frames after scoring two in the first. They had second and third with one out on three occasions and failed to score a run.

"I thought the difference in the ballgame was the runners we left on base," Wood said.

But when it looked like Oran was doomed with ace pitcher Matt Seyer knocked out during a four-run sixth inning for Thayer -- "I was real worried," said Williams -- the Eagles came back.

Trailing 8-2, they scored three in the bottom of the sixth. Brent Graviett's single drove in one run, and Irwin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score another. With the bases loaded and none out, though, Oran could get only one more run when Andrew Eckman snared Garrett Roslen's liner to left for a sacrifice fly.

"I thought that would be the game-saving play," Thayer coach Matt Pitts said.

"That left fielder made a heck of a catch," Wood said.

Chase Seyer, who replaced Matt Seyer in the top of the sixth, pitched out of his own trouble in the seventh as Thayer left a runner on third base for the second straight inning. Chase Seyer ended up with the win and improved to 6-0 on the season.

Thayer starter Anthony Martin also left the game after six innings, having run out of innings for the week. He had pitched the final four as Thayer rallied from an 8-0 deficit to post an 18-8 win in the sectional game against Valley of Caledonia.

Thayer's Aaron Henry retired two of the first three batters he faced in the seventh, walking Austin Dumey after striking out Chase Seyer and retiring Craig Friga. No. 9 hitter Brent Graviett walked on a 3-2 pitch. Matt Seyer drove in a run with a 3-2 single up the middle and a bobble in the outfield put runners on second and third. Irwin drove in two with a game-tying hit and another bobble allowed Irwin to reach second. Roslen was intentionally walked to set up Williams, who had struck out three times and was hit by a pitch.

"There was no one else I'd rather have up there than J-Will," Wood said. "He was stroking the baseball all year, and I was eager for him to get up there."

"It was nerve-racking," Williams said. "I was thinking about my previous strikeouts. I just wanted to hit the ball and keep us in the game. He gave me a fastball inside, and I went with the pitch."

Williams was a part of Oran's state tournament team from a year ago, a factor that may have paid off in the end.

"It came down to the fact they've been here before," Pitts said. "They played the last two innings like they had to play. They hit the ball when they had to hit it, right in the hole."

On the day, Thayer outhit Oran 12-8 and had four extra-base hits -- including Martin's solo home run -- to Oran's one.

"They hit the ball as I thought they would," Wood said. "They're huge kids. They're a football school."

But with freshman Chase Seyer picking up the win after a rough day at the plate and dimunitive Williams ending the day on a high note, Oran proved size doesn't matter in baseball.

"We played hard," Wood said, "and we didn't quit."

Oran 9, Thayer 8

WP -- Chase Seyer, 6-0; LP -- Aaron Henry. Extra base hits: 2B -- John Tollenaar (T), Henry (T), Matt Seyer (O); 3B -- Andrew Eckman (T); HR -- Anthony Martin (T). Multiple hits: Thayer, Dustin Hatterman 3-4, Martin 2-2, Tollenaar 2-4; Oran, M. Seyer 2-5, Irwin 2-4.

From the Penthouse to the Outhouse to the Penthouse

On Friday, April 1 Dalton Elfrink pitched his team to a 2-0 victory over the Leopold Wildcats. In that game the junior right-hander went 6 and 2/3 innings striking out 8 and allowed only 2 hits and walked 2 batters. His record improved to 2-0 on the season and the Eagles improved to 4-0.

Five days later, on Wednesday, with Oran leading Scott City 13-3 heading into the bottom of the 7th. Coach Wood called on Elfrink to finish out the game in relief of Kody Moore. How hard can that be, right? Apparently harder than anyone expected. In 1 inning of work, Elfrink gave up 5 runs on 3 hits (2 were home runs). He also walked 3. In fact, it got so bad, the Eagles had a freshman warming up in the bullpen. Finally, the last out was recorded on a nice catch by Trent Hency on a pop fly right at first base with the batter running into him.

So you can understand why maybe some weren't real confident when, two day later, Elfrink was named the starter against the Oak Ridge BlueJays and their ace and Mizzou-signee Brett Thomas. And maybe that uncertainty intensified just a little bit when Dalton walked the first batter he faced after getting ahead 0-2. Another walk in the 2nd inning also gave the 'Jays a baserunner. But in the 3rd, 4th & 5th innings the Eagles' hurler set down Oak Ridge in order. In fact, he retired 12 in a row. It was not until the 6th inning that the BlueJays were able to collect their first hit of the game, a single to left field by Jake LeGrand.

Unfortunately, Thomas matched Elfrink's performance, and both teams were scoreless heading into the 8th inning.

Oak Ridge brought in a relief pitcher for the final inning. Tyler Heuring flied out. Freshman phenom Seth Ressel, pinch hit for Trent Hency, and singled to right field. On the 2nd pitch to Dylan Dannenmueller, Ressel stole 2nd base. On the next, Dannenmueller was hit by the pitch, putting runners on first and second. Kody Moore walked to load the bases with one out. After a conference on the mound, the first pitch to Zac Chasteen, sailed past the catcher to allow Ressel to easily score the winning run from third.

On the day, Elfrink went 8 innings, allowed 1 hit and 3 walks while striking out 8. On the season Elfrink is now 3-0 leading the team in wins and innings pitched (20 2/3).

The Eagles are scheduled to play more BlueJays today, weather permitting, in Charleston at 5pm.

*****Oran vs. Charleston has been rescheduled for Monday, April 25th @ 6pm.

Eagles out to a 4-0 Start!

The Oran Eagles are 4-0 to start the 2011 baseball season. After 3 lopsided wins were dominated by the offense, it was pitching and defense that were keys in a 2-0 victory on the road against the Leopold Wildcats.

Dalton Elfrink went 6 2/3 innings allowing only two hits and two walks to pick up his second win on the young season. Kody Moore came in with the potential winning run at the plate and struck out Lance Seiler with base runners at first and third to end the game.

Defensively, the Eagles played error free.

Both tallies were the result of sacrifice flies. Zac Chasteen drove in Dylan Dannenmueller in the 2nd inning to give Oran the lead. Then, in the 5th, Elfrink pushed an insurance run across the plate in the person of Tyler Heuring for what proved to be the final score of the day.

TEAM LEADERS

Kody Moore leads the Eagles in batting average (.600), hits (9), home runs (2) and tied with Dylan Dannenmueller in runs scored (8). Tyler Heuring and Dalton Elfrink are tied for the team lead in RBI (10). On the mound, Elfrink and Chasteen both have 2 victories. Moore has 1 save. Moore leads the staff in ERA (o.00) and Elfrink in strikeouts (14).

A Banner Season

The 2010-2011 boys basketball campaign came to a screeching halt with last night's 52-41 sectional defeat at the hands of the New Haven Shamrocks at Park Hills Central High School. A cold start that saw the Eagles fall behind 12-4 after one quarter and 24-11 at half-time proved too large a deficit to overcome. Oran mounted a valiant fourth quarter comeback that pulled them to within 5 points on two occasions but were unable to get closer. New Haven made 7 of 8 free throws in the final frame to lead to the 11 point setback.

Oran finished the season at 19-9 that saw them win their first district title since 1999. The last three years under Head Coach Joe Shoemaker the Eagles are 46-35 and have posted back to back winning seasons for the first time in nearly a decade.
This was the final game for 8 seniors. They are Zac Chasteen, Tyler Heuring, Dillon Kimball, Reece Mangels, Nathan Michelsen, Jon Morrow, Preston Scherer and Nolan Urhahn. It's been a lot of fun watching these guys at the varsity level after most of them started playing up in the second half of their sophomore season.

Remember guys, next year at this time, there will be a Blue and Gold banner with your names on it hanging from the rafters of O.H.S. Proud of the whole team.

What do Prince and Meat Loaf have in Common?

Give up? Well the answer is: The Oran Eagles.

Okay, I might be stretching it a little bit but follow along. The last time the Eagles had cut down the nets after a District Championship game was 1999 (Party Like its 1999). Also, they beat Advance in two out of three this year; and that ain't bad.

So what was the difference between last night's game and the one on February 15th? I can think of three right of the bat. 1) Tyler Heuring - Healthy; 2) Nathan Michelsen - Healthy; 3) Jon Morrow - Healthy.

First, lets talk about Tyler. In the previous meeting Heuring was unable to play at all. As a result, without its Defensive Terminator, the Hornet's Grant Gray was able to pump in 20 , including five treys, as the Eagles stayed in a zone all evening. Last night, primarily because of the pressure from Heuring, Gray was held to only seven total points and just one three.

Secondly, even though Nathan appeared in the mid-February game, he played sparingly, scoring only eight points. In the Championship game however, Michelsen led his mates in scoring with 22. He scored from outside, inside and most importantly from the free throw line. The Eagles shot an amazing 25-27 from the charity stripe.

Thirdly, one might not have noticed but, even though Jon scored 20 in the previous meeting, he was battling illness. It just goes to show the big man's dominance against Advance. Last night he scored 17 points and grabbed numerous rebounds.

Both Morrow and Michelsen were named to the All-District Team.

As important as these three players were in last night's Championship clinching victory, it was a complete Team victory. With one minute remaining in Quarter 1, the Eagles trailed 14-10. A Joe Shoemaker timeout and a substitution inserting Freshman Phenom Seth Ressel, gave the team the spark they needed and completely changed the game. At that point, Oran went on one of its patented runs. A field goal followed by a steal of the inbounds pass and a field goal by Ressel tied the score at 14 as the quarter ended.

Into halftime the Eagles went on a 20-5 run and led 30-19.

Another crucial part of game occurred when Morrow picked up his 3rd foul with 6:00 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter. Advance was only able to cut three points off their deficit while Morrow was on the bench. When Morrow returned to start the fourth, he immediately showed his dominance and proved that Advance could not stop Jon, only Jon could stop Jon.

Throughout the game there were big baskets, big rebounds and big defensive stands from each and every player on the floor. Zac Chasteen converted a big basket after corralling a tough pass on a fast break. Reece Mangles chipped in with 8 points, several rebounds and brought the ball up the court numerous times against the Advance pressure defense. Not only did Heuring shut down Gray, he also added 12 points to the cause.

When all was said and done, the Home Team came away with a hard fought, well-earned victory 72-55.

NEXT UP:

The Eagles will travel to Park Hills on Wednesday, March 9 to take on the winner of tonight's game between #1 seed New Haven and #2 seed Viburnum. Oran's game is scheduled for 6pm.

LADY EAGLES:

The girls all-district team was also announced last night. Two Lady Eagles were named to the team. They were Cheyenne King and Haley Glastetter. The disappointing thing is that, even though Oran hosted the tournament, neither one of these young ladies were in attendance.

Look Both Ways

LOOKING BACK:

Well, we made it to the weekend with two victories that were almost too easy.

On Tuesday, Senior Night, Little Cheer Night and P.T.O. Chili Supper Night, the Eagles easily defeated Woodland 63-33. Jon Morrow led the way with 24 points, Preston Scherer added 13.

Two days later Oran ruined Kelly's Senior Night with a 78-42 shellacking of their hosts. Once again Morrow led all scorers with two dozen points and freshman phenom Seth Ressel (aka Bessel) chipped in 14.

OE concludes the regular season at 17-8.

LOOKING FORWARD:

Class 2, District 3 play starts tomorrow (Saturday) at OHS. The boys received a first round bye and will not play until Tuesday at 6pm against the winner of Saturday's game between Lesterville and Meadow Heights. Here is a link to the boys bracket.

The Eagless take on Chaffee at 3:30pm Saturday. Here is a link to the girls bracket.

Monday, February 21

Happy President's Day

It's the last week of February.

It's last week of the regular season for basketball.

Two Senior Nights this week and then the District Tournament starts on Saturday.

First though, looking back to last week; the Eagles split, losing to Advance and defeating Chaffee.

On Tuesday the 15th at home a short-handed OE fell to the Hornets 84-72. Oran played without Tyler Heuring while Nathan Michelsen only saw limited action due to illness. The Eagles were led by Jon Morrow's 20 points. Also in double figures were Reece Mangels with 15 points and Preston Scherer and Kody Moore with 11 each.

The Eagles got back to their winning ways on Friday the 18th with a 64-52 over the host Red Devils. Just when will thought the flu bug had made it's way out of the Eagle locker room and a complete roster would be available for Coach Joe "the boot" Shoemaker, the injury bug took it's place. Reece Mangels missed the game due to a finger injury. Morrow once again led Oran in scoring, this time with 26. Freshman Seth Ressel added 11 and Michelsen chipped in 10. With the victory the Eagles raised their record to 15-8.

Coming up next

This week the Eagles will face Woodland on Tuesday. Just a reminder, that evening the PTO will be hosting a chili supper. Also, it will be Senior Night for our winter athletes and pep band. And just when you thought it couldn't get any bigger, it's also Lil Cheer Night. You'd better get here early.

On Thursday, in the season finale, we will travel to Kelly for their Senior Night. Hopefully this year it will not take an hour and a half for the Hawks to get through this ceremony.

Also, hopefully the Eagles will take both games this week to have a three game winning streak headed into the district tournament and a 17-8 record.

Baseball Just Over the Horizon

It's almost time for baseball.

I'm sure the weather is just teasing us this week and more cold and snow will invade before the dandelions bloom. Like the weather I'm going to give is just a little foretaste of what I hope to be a FANtastic spring.

Eagles Ranked Preseason

The Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association in the preseason poll has Oran in the number 9 spot. Other local teams ranked in Class 1 include Cooter at number 2 and Oak Ridge at 5.

Field Upgrades

OHS Baseball Field will have at least a couple of improvements when opening day rolls around. A new batting cage has been installed outside the first base dugout. This new addition includes an Iron Mike pitching machine.

Also, word has it that a new addition will soon be making an appearance just past the leftfield fence. Apparently a new scoreboard, complete with inning by inning display and lots of other bells and whistles will soon be erected by our own Iron Mike, Mike Green.

After a Long Winter's Nap...

It's been quite some time since I've updated this site.

Two main reasons for coming back online include a couple of nice team accomplishments and one nice individual accomplishment.

Last night's victory at Bloomfield (67-54) was the third straight win and marked the second time in three games that the Eagles had to make a comeback.

On Jan. 28, while hosting the Leopold Wildcats, the Eagles trailed by five at halftime, cut the deficit to one after three and then outscored the visitors 19-6 in the final frame for a 12 point victory, 64-52. In that game, Oran was led by Jon Morrow's 16 points. Reece Mangels added 15 as did Nathan Michelsen including four 3-pointers.

Most recently, the Eagles fell behind early to the Bloomfield Wildcats trailing 13-5 with about four minutes left in the first quarter thanks in part to some torrid outside shooting by the home team and lackluster defense by the visitors.

A time out by Eagle coach Joe Shoemaker changed the momentum completely as his team came out and scored two quick baskets, cutting the deficit in half 13-9. That prompted a quick time out by Bloomfield, but the Eagles ended the quarter with a 9-2 run to take an 18-15 lead heading into the second quarter.

Period two would be more of the same as Oran outscored the 'Cats 15-4 to lead at half 33-19. After trailing by eight midway through the opening quarter, OE went on a 28-6 run into the locker room.

During the 3rd, the Eagle lead stretched to nearly 30 bringing about visions of a fourth quarter turbo clock. But Bloomfield once again regained their shooting touch from the outside and narrowed the gap to 10 in the closing minutes. Oran was able to hit enough free throws to maintain the lead and ensure the victory.

Once again the Eagles were led by Jon Morrow's 17 points. Kody Moore added 15, followed by Nathan Michelsen with 14. Reece Mangels chipped in 10.

Tyler Heuring missed the game due to illness. In his place, freshman Seth Ressel received his first significant varsity action. Ressel scored 7 points, including one 3-pointer. He also forced numerous turnovers playing the point on the zone defense. (very reminiscent of last year when Gabe Kielhofner used his long arms to disrupt passing lanes.)

In the Feb 2nd Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. The Oran Eagles checked in at #10 in Class 2.

The Feb. 9th poll did not have Oran listed.

Semosportsweb has the Eagles listed at number 24 this week after debuting at 25 last week.

Also, last night, included in Jon Morrow's scoring total was his 1000th career point. Congratulations Jon.

As of today (2/9/2011) the Varsity Eagles have a record of 14-6.
